Every time I photograph couples in wet conditions, I always think of the classic, romantic and rainy weather scenes from movies. I’m sure everyone has heard of “Singin’ in the Rain” but one scene that always comes to mind is Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard’s kissing scene in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) (right). I have to admit that I’ve never watched this movie but scenes like this is where I find many of my photographic inspiration in wet weather photo shoots and situations.

For Lauren and Jason’s engagement session, this wet weather condition was met. Perfect weather to be able to pull off these classic shots.

As usual, I start my couples in simple and warmer areas,  Chelsea Market which is indoors, to get them use to and comfortable my camera. We spent about 30 minutes inside before heading out to the wet weather. Even outside I mostly keep my couples as dry as possible so we try to find overpasses to be under most of the time.  Some of my favorite shots from our wet and rainy adventure below. Congrats to Lauren and Jason and I can’t wait for the wedding.

Why should I have wet weather engagement photoshoots?

1. Romantic Atmosphere

  • Rain naturally creates an intimate and cozy vibe. Think of sharing an umbrella, dancing in puddles, or stealing a kiss under a soft drizzle—it’s straight out of a romantic movie.

2. Dramatic Lighting and Reflections

  • Wet surfaces reflect light beautifully, adding a cinematic glow to your photos, especially if there are city lights or dramatic backdrops. Overcast skies also diffuse light evenly, reducing harsh shadows.

3. Unique Storytelling

  • Rainy shoots tell a story of embracing the unexpected together, which symbolizes the strength of your relationship. It adds a layer of spontaneity and charm to your engagement album.

4. Fun and Playful Opportunities

  • Incorporate fun elements like colorful umbrellas, stylish rain boots, or a classic trench coat. Jumping in puddles or letting loose in the rain can showcase your playful side as a couple.

5. Less Crowds at Popular Locations

  • Rainy days tend to keep crowds away, giving you more privacy at usually busy spots. This makes iconic landmarks or popular photo spots feel uniquely yours.

6. Timeless Aesthetic

  • Rain adds texture and movement to your photos. Whether it’s raindrops on glass, the sheen on your outfits, or the mist in the background, the details create a timeless, artistic aesthetic.

7. Memorable Experience

  • The experience of braving the weather together can create lasting memories. These photos will serve as a reminder of how you made the most of an unpredictable day.
