Michael Phelps Honored at the AAFA American Image Awards 2012

Today, I had the privilege of photographing The 34th annual AAFA American Image Awards, honoring U.S Olympic Swimmer Michael Phelps, Warnaco Group, Tanger Outlets, Kate Spade New York, and more. The event was hosted by celebrity stylist Robert Verdi, to benefit the Madison Square Boys & Girls Club of America.

The AAFA dinner raised $730,000 (not including the silent auction that was held) to support the Madison Square Boys & Girls Club summer and after-school program, as well as The Michael Phelps Foundation and its IM program, which helps children build self-esteem and confidence through swimming and other activities.

Final Photos with Michael Phelps

Photographing Michael Phelps was one of those pinch-me moments where sport, legacy, and storytelling all collided. Having the opportunity to be behind the camera with the most decorated Olympian of all time meant documenting more than just a recognizable face—it was about capturing the quiet confidence, discipline, and presence of someone whose career redefined greatness.

For me, it was a rare chance to translate an icon’s energy into imagery that felt authentic and human, balancing the weight of his global stature with subtle, intimate moments. Experiences like this are a reminder of why I love what I do: photography as access, as trust, and as a way to visually honor extraordinary lives.
