A Magical Proposal at Rockefeller Ice Rink: Love, Cheers, and “Moves Like Jagger”

New York City is always buzzing with energy during the holiday season, but few places capture the magic quite like the Rockefeller Center Ice Rink. This past December, I had the honor of photographing an unforgettable proposal at this iconic location—complete with twinkling lights, a cheering crowd, and the unexpected but fitting soundtrack of “Moves Like Jagger” playing in the background.

A Surprise on the Ice

The couple took to the ice for what seemed like a casual skating session, gliding under the glow of the towering Christmas tree. Little did she know, her partner had planned something extraordinary. As the familiar beat of “Moves Like Jagger” filled the air, he took her by the hand, skated to the center, and dropped to one knee. The rink fell into a hush for a split second before erupting into cheers as she gasped, covering her face in shock and joy.

With the city skyline as their witness and the rink’s onlookers cheering them on, she said yes! It was a moment of pure magic, frozen in time—literally and figuratively.

Capturing the Joy

After the proposal, we took a short walk around Rockefeller Plaza for an impromptu engagement session. The glow of the holiday lights provided the perfect romantic backdrop. We captured a mix of candid laughter, warm embraces, and classic NYC moments—against the decorated windows of Saks Fifth Avenue, under the sparkling angels lining the Channel Gardens, and even with a few twirls on Fifth Avenue.

The excitement of the moment was palpable in every frame. The couple’s energy was infectious, and their love story was made even more special by the thousands of strangers who had witnessed and celebrated with them.

As a destination wedding and engagement photographer, I have had the privilege of capturing love stories in some of the most stunning locations around the world. Recently, I had the opportunity to fly into the San Francisco Bay Area to photograph a magical engagement session that seamlessly blended the beauty of nature with the iconic cityscape. Our journey began at sunset at the serene Sonoma Botanical Garden and ended with a captivating nighttime shoot along the vibrant Embarcadero in San Francisco.

Nestled in the rolling hills of Sonoma County, the Sonoma Botanical Garden provided the perfect backdrop to start this engagement session. As the sun began its descent, the golden hues of the setting sun bathed the lush landscapes in a warm glow. The couple, elegantly dressed, walked hand in hand through winding garden paths, surrounded by towering trees and vibrant floral displays.

The peaceful ambiance of the garden allowed us to capture intimate moments—soft whispers, stolen glances, and genuine laughter. Against the rich foliage and the golden light filtering through the leaves, every frame exuded warmth and romance. The reflections in the tranquil pond, the textures of the winding trails, and the bursts of color from the seasonal blooms all played a part in creating timeless images that perfectly encapsulated their love story.

As dusk settled, we made our way to San Francisco’s Embarcadero, where the city’s glittering lights set the stage for an entirely different mood. The contrast between the natural elegance of Sonoma and the urban vibrance of the Embarcadero made for an unforgettable engagement session.

Against the backdrop of the illuminated Bay Bridge, we captured silhouettes that embodied the essence of their love—bold, adventurous, and deeply connected. The reflections of the city lights on the water added an extra layer of magic, enhancing the romantic atmosphere. We strolled through the lively Ferry Building area, using the ambient streetlights to create moody and cinematic portraits. The energy of the city, combined with the couple’s chemistry, resulted in a collection of images that felt dynamic yet intimate.

Engagement photos in Positano, Italy is a photographer’s dream.

My recent trip to Positano, Italy to photograph my couple, Janine and Derek’s , dream destination wedding was magical. But before the wedding, we had the opportunity to do a little engagement session along this beautiful seaside town.

The enchanting cliffside village, with its pastel-colored buildings cascading down to the shimmering Tyrrhenian Sea, provided the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable photo shoot.

We wandered through narrow, winding streets, stopping at hidden alleyways, charming piazzas, and flower-filled terraces. The light was magical, with the golden hues of the Italian sun enhancing the romance of every moment.

We made our way down to Spiaggia Grande, where the couple strolled along the beach, their joy reflected in the tranquil waters. The blend of natural beauty and their palpable love made for some of the most stunning shots I’ve ever taken. It was a true privilege to document their love story in such an iconic location.

The Path of the Gods in Italy

The couple hike along the steps called “The Path of the Gods”. The Path of the Gods, or Sentiero degli Dei, is a hiking trail in Italy that includes approximately 10,000 steps down to Positano.

Boston Engagement Photos at Boston Common, Charles River and Back Bay
Nilam & Anand Engagement Pictures

About a year ago, Anand came from Boston to New York City to propose to Nilam. I had the wonderful opportunity to capture that very special moment. Since that time, I’ve become quite close to Anand, Nilam and their entire family. Now was the time for their official engagement session and since I’ve only been to Boston several times before, it was only fitting for me to go there to photograph their engagement pictures. Going there is refreshing for any artist to get inspired and to see what one can come up with in a creative manner. What I’ve been told and seen was that Boston Common was the place to be.

Of course there are thousands upon thousands of pictures taken there everyday, so being creative and giving them something that was uniquely theirs and theirs alone is definitely challenging. Boston Commons was definitely very beautiful and I could have spent a whole day their just photographing different aspects of the park but we had to move on. We ended up hitting a little spot near the Charles River which had a great rusted underpass. When I saw it, I knew we could get some great edgier shots there. And finally, we finish off at Back Bay on Newbury Street, another great place with tons of restaurants and places to shop. Enjoy!

We began our session at Boston Common, the oldest public park in the United States. The lush greenery and winding pathways provided a serene setting for the couple’s first portraits. As they strolled hand-in-hand beneath the towering trees and paused for tender moments on the picturesque footbridges, the soft morning light cast a dreamy glow over each frame.

From there, we ventured into Back Bay, a neighborhood that effortlessly blends historic charm with modern elegance. The couple danced along the tree-lined streets, framed by stunning brownstone buildings and the grand architecture of Commonwealth Avenue. Each corner of Back Bay offered a new and unique backdrop, allowing me to capture a variety of moods and emotions in every shot.

The second location was at DUMBO, Brooklyn. DUMBO offers an array of of edgier street art to use as backgrounds.

One of the biggest draws is the variety of settings within a short walking distance—from the breathtaking Manhattan Bridge shot on Washington Street to the skyline views at Pebble Beach and Jane’s Carousel. Whether I’m capturing a couple sharing an intimate moment by the water or silhouetted against the city lights at sunset, DUMBO offers an incredible mix of urban charm and natural beauty.

With their wedding only a week out, Michelle and Matt were finally able to take their engagement pictures with me. Scheduling was a bit of a challenge but we got it done and had a great time doing it. Originally, we were going to take the engagement pictures at the Metropolitan Building, their wedding venue, but alas it will have to be saved for the Big Day.

TOP 5 Best Spot for Engagement Pictures in Brooklyn

After a little bit of brainstorming, we decided on DUMBO Brooklyn, with the paved cobble stone streets. DUMBO has always been one of my top 5 places to take my bridal parties or my engaged couples for great outdoor shots. This place is similar to the Meat Packing District in that the “outdoor art” changes very frequently. I’m a big proponent of graffiti art and always love to incorporate an edgier feel to my images. Plus, you have the some of the best backdrops one can image, The Brooklyn Bridge. Below are a few of my favorite shots.
